Begin your journey in 1631, when Capuchin friars arrived here carrying 300 cartloads of remains from their former monastery. Over time, the crypt became the resting place of around 3,700–4,000 friars, buried between the 16th and 19th centuries. The soil beneath your feet was even brought from Jerusalem, giving this sacred space an added spiritual connection. After around 30 years, as bodies naturally decomposed, the friars were exhumed to make room for the newly deceased. Their bones were then carefully arranged, transforming the crypt into a symbolic and artistic environment. These designs were not created to disturb, but to gently remind visitors of the fleeting nature of life.

The Crypt of the Resurrection frames a painting of Jesus raising Lazarus, surrounded by bones that seem to echo the theme of life beyond death.
Finally, the Mass Chapel offers a moment of contrast free of bones, yet rich in meaning, where friars once gathered in prayer.

Each evening, the Capuchin friars would come here to reflect before sleep, not as a place of fear, but of understanding. Among the walls, a simple message appears one that still resonates today: “What you are now, we once were. What we are now, you will become.” Even the history of visiting this place is unique. In the 19th century, access was limited to a short period after All Souls’ Day and at one time, women were not permitted to enter. Today, the crypt is open to all, offering a rare chance to experience one of Rome’s most unusual and contemplative sites.
