Explore mystical Shingon Buddhism, 1,000 Kannon statues, and the dramatic rise and fall of Toyotomi Family in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district.
This tour explores how spiritual belief and political power shaped Kyoto’s cultural identity through three remarkable sites in the Higashiyama area.
We begin at Chishaku-in Temple, the head temple of the Chisan branch of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. Shingon is a mystical form of Buddhism that emphasizes secret rituals, symbolic mandalas, and the idea of attaining enlightenment in this very body. Here, you will learn about its hidden teachings and symbolic worldview. The temple garden presents a distinctive design: a long, narrow pond stretches before a carefully constructed artificial hill, adorned with uniquely trimmed azalea bushes shaped into rounded forms. Inside the treasure hall, you can freely appreciate the National Treasure sliding-door paintings of cherry blossoms and maple trees—masterpieces that embody both refined beauty and the transience of nature.
Next, we visit Sanjusangendo Temple, famous for its breathtaking hall lined with 1,000 life-sized statues of Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. The sight of these golden figures standing in endless rows creates a profound spiritual atmosphere. This temple is also known as a sacred place for Japanese archery. It hosted the legendary 24-hour non-stop archery contest. Today, this tradition continues in the annual ceremony where around 2,000 young archers—many celebrating their coming of age—participate in a spectacular event. You will also hear fascinating legends about the emperor associated with the temple’s founding.
Finally, we explore Toyokuni Shrine, dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the powerful 16th-century leader who unified Japan approximately 400 years ago. From humble origins to national ruler, Hideyoshi’s life represents one of the most dramatic rises in Japanese history. At this shrine, we trace the prosperity and eventual downfall of the Toyotomi clan, gaining insight into the fragile balance between military authority, political ambition, and spiritual reverence.
Together, these three sites reveal a compelling story of mysticism, devotion, ambition, and impermanence.
