Description

A private day with your own driver-guide at Karavasta, Albania's largest lagoon: pelicans, the Divjaka pine forest, the 360° tower and Ardenica Monastery. Pickup in Tirana, Durrës or Golem.
Karavasta is Albania's largest lagoon: 42 square kilometres of shallow water between a pine forest and the Adriatic, protected as a national park and listed under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance. It is home to the rare Dalmatian pelican, which nests here and nowhere else in Albania, and to more than 200 other bird species.

This is a day for the quiet months. From autumn to spring the beach crowds are gone and there are no mosquitoes. Flamingos stop here in autumn, large flocks of ducks spend the winter on the water, and in early spring the pelicans start nesting.

Your driver-guide picks you up at your hotel in Tirana, Durrës or Golem. Walk under the Aleppo and stone pines of the Divjaka forest, climb the Kulla 360° tower for a view over the lagoon, the forest and the sea, and follow the wooden boardwalk out over the water to look for pelicans, flamingos and herons. Then walk the long, empty beach and see the fishermen's wooden huts and nets on the lagoon.

Stop for a long lunch of local food in Divjakë: add lunch when you book, or pay on the spot. On the way, visit Ardenica Monastery on a hill above the Myzeqe plain. It was founded in 1282, and in 1451 Albania's national hero Skanderbeg married Andronika Arianiti here.

There are two start times. The morning start is best for birds. From November to February, the later start ends the day by the lagoon at sunset, when the water turns gold and the fishermen's huts stand in silhouette.

This is a private tour: one car and one price for up to 4 people, with your own English-speaking driver-guide. You decide how long to stay at each stop.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The price is per car (up to 4 people), not per person. For 5–8 people we send two cars.
The birds are wild: what you see depends on the season and the weather. The pelican nesting area is protected, so you watch from a distance. Bring binoculars if you have them.
Best months: flamingos September–November, wintering ducks December–February, nesting pelicans March–June.
The later start ends at sunset from November to February; in other months it is simply a later day.
Wear warm, windproof clothes and shoes for sandy or muddy paths. In warm months, bring insect repellent.
Ardenica is a working monastery: please cover shoulders and knees.
From November to February it gets dark around 16:30, so part of the drive back is after dark.
Lunch add-on: tell us about vegetarian or other dietary needs.
