ID: GYG1247486-1915448
Category:
Country: Andorra
Duration:
3 days
Description
Follow in the footsteps of WWII aviators and Jewish escapees on a 3-day trek from France to Andorra. Learn about the escape lines used by Allied forces during WW2 and visit historic sites on the way.
Begin your journey in Tarascon sur Ariège train stations. Visit the open-air war memorial and take a scenic walk along the river. You will spend the night at a hotel in Tarascon sur Ariège.
DAY 2, ascend from the Soulcem Dam towards the Port de Rat (2,539 m) and Arinsal. Follow the footsteps of S Sgt Bud Owens, Sgts Plasket and Bailey with local guide and French resistance member Emile Delphy in October 1943. This was one of the many escape routes crossing the Pyrenees during World War 2. Finish the trek in Arinsal, where you will either stay at Hotel Arinsal or Hotel El Serrat. If the snowlevel is too high for crossing this pass, we will cross via the Port de Fontargente (2,261 m).
DAY 2 alternative: We will climb up to the Port de Fontargente (2,261 m) and descend to Soldeu, following the route taken by Sergeant Raganis and his fellow escapees during World War ll.
On this day you are expected to walk for about 6-7 hours and ascended height gain, depending on which alternative, will be between 900 - 1,100 meters. So a reasonable level of fitness is required.
DAY 3, Transfer from Andorra back to Tarascon-sur-Ariège. If time on returning from Andorra we will stop at Estany d’Abalettes, a former border observation post. You will see and learn about various escape route starting points used during the war and receive a commemorative escape certificate.
Airport or city transfers are available from Toulouse on request for a supplementary charge. We do bespoke groups for families or friends and look forward to welcoming you here. We live in France close to the start of the route.
