Khor Virap - history and legends
Perched on a cliff and surrounded by a wide plain, Khor Virap Monastery will impress you with its marvelous view of Mount Ararat and its eventful history. “Khor Virap” in translation means “deep dungeon”. You will learn why it was here that Gregory the Illuminator, thanks to whom Armenia adopted Christianity, was in the death row for 13 years. And even go down into the 6.5-meter-deep pit where he was kept. We explore the ancient chapel and the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. And also we will reach the meeting place of the apostles Thaddeus and Bartholomew, where a memorial cross is installed.
Cave of Birds and Areni winery
From the Ararat region, we will go to the Vayots Dzor region, where we will meet a completely different landscape: green fields will be replaced by picturesque gorges, red-ocher rocks and caves. In one of them - the cave of Birds - we will definitely make a stop.Vayots Dzor is also one of the oldest centers of Armenian winemaking. You will be convinced of this at the famous Areni factory, where you will taste several types of the wine of the same name. The grape varieties from which it is made grow only in this province of Armenia and nowhere else in the world. You will taste many types of wine, including fruit and pomegranate, and you will be able to buy it here and return back to Yerevan not empty-handed, having absorbed the spirit of ancient Christian shrines. Vayots Dzor and, in particular, the village of Areni, has been the cradle of Armenian winemaking for thousands of years. Hin Areni winery masterfully showcases historical and local varieties of Armenian grapes.
Ancient and great Noravank
At the end, you will visit one of the most famous monuments of medieval Armenia - the Noravank monastery complex with magnificent churches and chapels. Built in the 13th-14th centuries by the powerful Orbelian princes, it will amaze you with its harmonious combination of architecture and nature. On its territory you will see a unique two-storey church with narrow cantilevered stairs and learn about the symbolism of the stairs․ Inscribed in the sheer red rocks of the Arpa River Gorge, it will seem like a natural continuation of the landscape! You will walk around the territory of the monastery and see the ancient khachkars made by the architect Momik - huge carved stones on which stone crosses were made with a hammer and chisel.
