Description
The Gesamtkunstwerk of Art Nouveau in the 1st district of Vienna, off the beaten track
On the trail of "the young savages"
"To the time its art, to art its freedom"
Around 1900, many artists were tired of the then-prevailing historicism in Vienna: they wanted to escape the constraints of Ringstrasse architecture with fresh ideas and make a statement. A new style was spreading across Europe. The idea of the "Gesamtkunstwerk" (total work of art) found its ardent followers and also developed its own forms in Vienna - whether in architecture, household goods, jewelry, or fashion. Home of the "Young Wild Ones" was the Secession, the epitome of bold, unconventional architecture, and affectionately known as the Goldenes Krauthappel in the Viennese vernacular.
We're focusing on this distinctive era, which still shapes the cityscape of Vienna today, and is closely associated with names like Otto Wagner, Koloman Moser, and Gustav Klimt, and which came to an abrupt end with their deaths.
