Description
Visit Srebrenica and Potočari Memorial Center, meet genocide survivors and hear personal stories of loss, return, remembrance and rebuilding life after the war.
Visit Srebrenica and the Potočari Memorial Center, meet people who survived the genocide and discover how the local community lives today. Hear personal stories about loss, return, remembrance, politics and rebuilding life after the war.
Travel from Sarajevo to Srebrenica for a deeply human experience focused not only on the events of July 1995, but also on the people who survived, returned and continue to build their lives in the region today.
During the journey through Eastern Bosnia, your guide will explain the breakup of Yugoslavia, the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the fall of the UN-declared safe area and the genocide committed in Srebrenica.
At the Srebrenica–Potočari Memorial Center, visit the cemetery, memorial room and exhibitions inside the former Dutch Battalion base. Whenever available, part of the visit is led by a Memorial Center guide who survived the genocide or lost close family members. Hearing this history from someone personally connected to the events gives the visit a perspective that cannot be found in textbooks.
Continue to Srebrenica town to understand what happened after the war. Meet local residents, business owners, returnees and members of families affected by the genocide. Conversations may include their personal memories, the return process, coexistence, political divisions, denial, unemployment and the challenges of raising families and running businesses in Srebrenica today.
The experience does not present Srebrenica only as a memorial site. It introduces a living community whose residents continue to work, raise families, preserve memory and create a future despite loss and continuing political tensions.
Depending on availability, share coffee or lunch with local residents and listen to their stories in a respectful and informal setting. Survivor participation cannot be guaranteed for every departure, as meetings depend on personal availability and circumstances.
