Description

Our food tour through the former military district Grbavica combines the delicious with the disastrous. Learn about the resilience of Sarajevo and get to know Bosnian culture through traditional food!
Tourists don’t stray here very often, but Grbavica’s delicious delicacies and socialist-brutalist architecture are waiting to be discovered, and a walk through this part of the city gives an insight into how people live today.

Hardly any other district in Sarajevo has such a turbulent history as Grbavica. The predominantly military neighbourhood was occupied during the Bosnian War – a siege within a siege – and was left in ruins at the end of the war. Slowly, the inhabitants of Grbavica rebuilt their neighbourhood – and today it is a lively, popular district with numerous restaurants, cafés and parks.

On this culinary journey, you’ll learn a lot about the siege of the city, but also about the will of the people to revive their Sarajevo. You will taste local Bosnian specialities and have the opportunity to get to know the people of this city up close in the places where their culture shines through most: Their favourite restaurants!

Highlights

  • Try four traditional Bosnian dishes in local neighbourhood spots
  • Taste the (in)famous Bosnian rakija – liquor made from different fruit
  • Learn about the besieged Grbavica neighbourhood
  • Understand how the people of Sarajevo defended their city
