Description

Take a guided walking tour of the city of Lisbon and become acquainted with one of Europe's most fascinating cities. With your informative guide, see and learn about some of this city's most famous historical landmarks and stop for lunch.
Starting at your hotel, you will commence your adventure with a trip to the newest neighborhood of the city, the “new” Lisbon, the Park of Nations quarter. Admire the neighborhood's modern architecture and of particular note, a train station considered to be the most beautiful in the world, “Estacao do Oriente”. Feast your eyes upon this fantastic mixture of architecture which is totally unique to this part of the world. Continue on your journey to “Senhora do Monte” hill, where you will be overwhelmed with one of the most spectacular panoramic views of Lisbon, as well as of the estuary of the Tagus river. From the top of the hill, you will also drive down to visit the “Se Catedral de Lisboa” (Lisbon’s old cathedral) built in 1148.

Close by, and next up on this tour is a visit to Saint Antony’s church. Marvel at this stunning religious structure before crossing the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon, the Alfama district. Here you will see the tile covered facades of the old buildings, the narrow streets, alleys, and the old trams. Continuing on your tour you will find yourself in the neighborhood of “Baixa” the most destroyed quarter of the city by the devastating earthquake of 1755. Your guide will be sure to entertain you with the facts of how this area became the main business center in the country.

Drive to the “Avenida da Liberdade” the Portuguese Champs Elysees, where you will witness the statue of the visionary Marquis of Pombal at the geographic center of the city. Next, you will stop at the top of “Parque Eduardo VII” (king of England) for a dazzling view of the city whilst you learn about the several treaties and alliances between Portugal and England. After this, it is lunchtime! Your friendly and informative guide will be happy to assist with any restaurant recommendations. Follow up your lunch with a trip to a completely free of charge visit to the “world” of olive oils. Here you can learn about the different olive oils in Portugal and taste several different varieties of this product.

Time to visit the Belem quarter (Bethlehem), the monumental area dedicated to the great Portuguese seafarers of the 15th and 16th-centuries. Here you will visit the Tower of Belem (the symbol of Lisbon), the monastery of St. Gerome (Mosteiro dos Jeronimos), a masterpiece of Portuguese 16th-century architecture and World Heritage listed monument by UNESCO, and the monument to the Discoveries. Before you leave you will get to taste the most famous pastry in Portugal: the “Pastel de Belem”, a delicious egg custard tart once made by the monks at the Jeronimo’s monastery.
