Country: Brazil
Duration:

Description
Immerse yourself in the lush beauty of the Atlantic Forest on a guided hike to the Melancia Waterfall. Swim in crystal-clear natural pools and spot wildlife in their natural habitat.
Begin your day with pickup from your hotel or pousada in Paraty. A 30-minute transfer takes you to the trailhead at Taquari, where your bilingual guide — certified in wilderness first aid — delivers a safety briefing before you enter the forest.
From the first steps, the environment envelops you. Follow a path through dense tropical rainforest beneath a towering canopy of centuries-old trees draped in bromeliads, orchids, and mosses. The air is thick with humidity, light filters green through the leaves, and the soundtrack is entirely natural — birdsong, running water, the rustle of unseen animals in the undergrowth.
This is one of the most biodiverse corridors in the Paraty region, and walking quietly greatly increases the chances of wildlife encounters. With luck, you may spot sloths hanging in the canopy, squirrel monkeys in the branches, and tropical birds including toucans, hummingbirds, and macaws. The forest floor is alive with colorful poison dart frogs, leaf-cutter ant highways, and iridescent butterflies.
On very rare occasions, the Muriqui — the largest primate in the Americas and critically endangered — has been spotted along this route, though sightings are never guaranteed. The trail is long but elevation gain is moderate, making it accessible to most reasonably fit hikers without prior experience. The pace is set by your guide according to the group, with regular pauses for hydration, wildlife observation, and photography.
After approximately two hours, the sound of falling water announces your arrival. Melancia Falls consist of three cascades up to 15 meters, feeding into deep natural pools surrounded by mossy rocks and forest. Swim in water so clean and cool it feels restorative, surrounded by untouched jungle.
The return follows the same trail, often revealing details missed on the way in — different bird species, new forest perspectives, changing light. On the way back to Paraty, an optional stop at a local restaurant with panoramic bay views offers regional cuisine after a full day in the forest.
