Duration: 08:00 hours

Description

Discover a side of Hong Kong you didn’t know existed. Spend a day hiking across green hills, soaking up breath-taking views over the South China Sea.
The tour conveniently meets in the city centre. The small group then leaves the city against the flow of office workers, on its efficient public transport system. The final leg into the rural landscape will be via taxi.

The hiking tour follows the well-known MacLehose Trail. The tour covers 12km out of its total 100 km and follows mostly paved paths. The hiking level is moderate, with a height difference of 500m.

The hiking begins at the High Island Reservoir offering sprawling scenic views.
Continue the path towards the coastline to the first village and beach and the vast South China Sea. By the time you reach the 3rd beach you’ve worked up a bit of an appetite. Simple lunch will be shared at small restaurant on the beachfront in the shade of trees.

After lunch the network of paved paths passes by a number of fascinating abandoned Hakka villages. The Sai Kung uplands and coastline are sparsely populated since villagers left their ancestral lands in favour of city lives in the 1970’s. Hike through the deserted villages and see the homes, lands, and locations these villagers left behind.

The hike ends within the country park still, a bus then takes the hikers to Sai Kung Village, a fishing town with a lively promenade. After a stroll or a drink, the public transport will whisk you back into the city.
