Description
Stroll a scenic paved path through lush gardens and historic sites to Waimea Falls. Discover rare plants, animals and Hawaiian heritage at your own pace.
Enjoy a self-guided day exploring Waimea Valley, a place of deep cultural and natural significance on O‘ahu’s North Shore. With your general admission ticket, take a leisurely walk along a paved path that winds through world-renowned botanical gardens and ancient Hawaiian sites, leading you up to the sacred Waimea Falls. The walk covers 3/4 of a mile each way, making for a gentle 1 1/2 mile round trip suitable for most visitors.
Waimea Valley’s botanical garden features over 50 plant collections across 60 themed gardens, showcasing more than 3,000 species from nearly 930 genera and 190 families. Discover tropical and subtropical plants from around the world, including over 120 native Hawaiian species and around 280 threatened or endangered species. The valley is also home to over 1,100 wild-collected accessions, making it a living sanctuary for rare and important flora.
As you explore, you’ll encounter historic and religious sites that reflect the valley’s mission to preserve and perpetuate its human, cultural, and natural resources for future generations. Please be mindful and do not touch, disturb, or remove any rocks or objects, honoring the beliefs of the ancient Hawaiians and their descendants who continue to protect this special place.
At the end of the main path, you’ll reach Waimea Falls—a 40-foot waterfall revered in Hawaiian culture as both a beautiful natural wonder and a symbol of life-giving force. Spend as much time as you wish taking in the sights and sounds of this sacred spot before making your way back at your own pace.
