The Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival is one of Tokyo’s most iconic summer events, with roots dating back to 1733. Originally held to honor victims of famine and plague, the fireworks were part of a ritual to mourn the dead and uplift the spirits of Edo’s citizens.Revived in 1978, the modern festival now takes place every late July, featuring over 20,000 fireworks across two main display areas. Drawing more than a million spectators, it’s one of Japan’s Three Great Fireworks Festivals—and for many, the most romantic night of Tokyo’s summer.
This year marks the 48th edition of the modern Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival.
Join us and immerse yourself in the magical atmosphere of this unforgettable summer night in Tokyo!
Travel to the eastern side of Tokyo and immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Koto City, home to the beloved Koto Fireworks Festival. Originally launched in 1982 as the Sunamachi Fireworks Festival, the event was created to promote harmony and community spirit in the local area. Over the years, it has grown into a major summer event through the support of local governments and residents.
From your designated seat in Sunamachi Mizube Park, enjoy an up-close and uninterrupted view of the fireworks spectacle. With the launch site just a short distance away, you’ll feel the power and beauty of each burst light up the sky.
The dazzling reflections on the river, combined with the city skyline and the artistry of the historic Soke Hanabi Kagiya, create an unforgettable blend of tradition and modernity — a true Tokyo summer night experience.
