Description

Explore Cotopaxi National Park on a guided 4x4 tour from Quito or Latacunga. Discover volcanic valleys, hidden lagoons, and natural springs, and visit the archaeological site of Pucará de Salitre.
Begin your adventure with a drive south along the PanAmerican Highway toward Cotopaxi National Park. Enter through the northern access, a quieter route rarely used by most visitors, and pass through the rural Andean highlands, where traditional haciendas, grazing cattle, and small farming communities still shape the landscape.

Once inside the protected area, follow an off-road route to the northeastern sector of the park. Visit the archaeological site, an ancient pre-Hispanic settlement that offers a glimpse into the region's past. Continue deeper into the volcanic valley to explore the natural springs and Santo Domingo Lagoon, fed by glacial meltwater descending from Cotopaxi Volcano.

This unique landscape sits at approximately 3,800 m (12,470 ft) above sea level and provides excellent opportunities for wildlife observation, photography, and quiet contemplation of the Andean wilderness.

For those interested in reaching higher elevations, there is the optional possibility of visiting the upper parking area of Cotopaxi at approximately 4,500 m (14,760 ft), depending on weather and acclimatization conditions. Horseback riding can also be arranged as an optional activity (additional cost: USD 30 per hour).

Make a final stop inside the park at Limpiopungo Lagoon, one of Cotopaxi's most iconic wetlands and an important habitat for Andean birdlife. Before leaving the protected area, visit the Cotopaxi Visitor Center to learn more about the geology, ecology, and cultural history of the national park.
