Description

Explore one of the world’s most extreme landscapes on a short journey into the Danakil region. Experience dramatic geology, desert altitude, and landscapes found nowhere else on Earth.
Day 1 begins with a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera, the gateway to the Afar Region. From here, the journey continues by road across a vast volcanic desert, passing through semi-arid plains dotted with acacia shrubs and salt-tolerant plants. As you descend into the Danakil Depression, the heat increases and the landscape becomes more stark and otherworldly.

The first major stop is Lake Afdera, a natural saline lake located below sea level and surrounded by wide salt flats. The lake’s high salt content creates a unique environment, and travelers may enjoy a short, optional swim in its highly buoyant waters. The surrounding terrain is dominated by evaporite deposits, salt crusts, and ancient basalt lava flows formed by past volcanic eruptions.

In the late afternoon, the expedition continues toward Erta Ale Volcano through rugged off-road terrain. After a light dinner and short rest near the base of the volcano, a night hike leads to the crater. Erta Ale is one of the few volcanoes on Earth with a persistent lava lake, and visiting after sunset allows you to witness the glowing molten lava, rising heat, and sulfuric air that define this active shield volcano. The night is spent camping near Erta Ale, with very basic facilities due to the remoteness of the area.

Day 2 begins with a very early overnight drive toward Dallol, arriving around sunrise. Located approximately 125 meters below sea level, Dallol is one of the lowest and hottest places on the planet. The area is known for its striking mineral formations, where bright yellow, green, and orange colors are created by sulfur, salt, and hydrothermal activity. Steam vents, acidic pools, and salt canyons form a landscape unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Visits include a nearby salt lake, sulfur springs, potash formations, and traditional salt-mining areas where Afar workers can be seen extracting salt by hand. Due to extreme heat, salinity, and acidity, vegetation is almost entirely absent in this region.

By midday, the journey continues from Dallol toward Mekele, passing through Berhale and gradually climbing out of the Danakil Depression. Along the way, the landscape transforms dramatically as altitude increases from below sea level to over 2,000 meters. The barren volcanic desert gives way to shrubs, farmland, and eucalyptus trees as the road enters the Tigray Highlands, where temperatures are cooler and the air feels noticeably fresher.

The expedition concludes with arrival in Mekele in the late afternoon, followed by an evening flight back to Addis Ababa, marking the end of an intense and unforgettable journey through one of Earth’s most extreme environments.
