Description
Step into the intimate world of the Majorelle family! This house is the symbol of Art Nouveau architecture in Nancy. Keep exploring the collections at the École de Nancy Museum.
This artist's house for an artist was built between 1900 and 1901. This is the first work by architect Henri Sauvage. Its patron was Louis Majorelle, a famous cabinetmaker, ironworker, and painter from Nancy. He helped create the Alliance Provinciale des Arts Industriels, or just École de Nancy, in 1901, along with Émile Gallé, Antonin Daum, and Eugène Vallin. At the forefront of Art Nouveau in France, this total art movement draws inspiration from nature and rejects the models of the past. Their works are on display at the Musée de l'École de Nancy, the former home of Eugène Corbin, a wealthy patron of Art Nouveau. He made an amazing donation to the city of Nancy in 1935: 759 pieces from all fields, created by the main artists of this artistic movement. Inside the house, you'll find furniture, art, glass, ceramics, stained glass, paintings, and fabrics that show off the diverse techniques and skills of Nancy's artists. Welcome to the Belle Époque!
