Description
Explore Lyon through the eyes of a "Gone" : a true local and certified expert. Unlock secret traboules, the genius of silk weavers, and the legends behind our world-famous culinary heritage.
The Panoramic Prelude (45 min)
Our journey begins where the city was born: atop the Fourvière hill at the exit of the Funicular in front of the Basilica. As a "Gone" (a true Lyonnais), I will share the stories that led to the birth of the Basilica and take you back to the Roman foundation. I will guide you through the majestic Gallo-Roman theaters, sharing the stories of the city’s birth in 43 BC. Standing above the city, you will understand how Lyon’s unique geography, nestled between two hills and two rivers, set the stage for its future as a global silk and food capital.
Legends of the Montée du Gourguillon (45 min)
As we descend from the heights, we enter the Montée du Gourguillon, Lyon’s oldest and most atmospheric street. This is where the legends of the city truly come to life. I will share the local myths hidden behind these medieval facades and introduce you to the early days of the Silk trade. This winding path serves as our historical bridge, leading us from the Roman past toward the Renaissance wealth created by the prestigious silk looms.
The Silent Whispers of the Traboules (1h)
In the heart of the UNESCO-listed Vieux-Lyon, we enter the world of the Canuts (silk weavers). We will walk through the historic public traboules, following the official heritage paths. I will teach you the art of "trabouler" in total silence : a sign of respect for the residents of these living monuments. You will discover the architectural genius of these hidden corridors, designed to protect precious silk from the rain, and learn how they later served as secret arteries for the French Resistance.
The Soul of the Table & Puppet Legends (30 min)
We conclude near the Saint-Jean Cathedral to witness its rare astronomical clock. Here, we dive into the cultural roots of Lyon’s culinary fame. I will share the story of the Mères Lyonnaises: the legendary women who defined our gastronomy, and the satirical wit of Guignol, the puppet who gave a voice to the silk workers. You will leave with my recommendations for the most authentic local Bouchons and the best local specialties to try during your stay.
