Description
Walk Nice's Promenade des Anglais and grand boulevards in a group of 14 or fewer. Two hours decoding the Beaux-Arts hotels, Art Nouveau details, and Belle Epoque ambition behind every facade.
Most visitors walk the Promenade des Anglais, snap a photo of the Negresco, and move on. This tour teaches you what you're actually looking at.
When the railway reached Nice in the 1860s, the city transformed almost overnight. European aristocracy arrived for the winter, and Nice built itself into something worthy of their attention: grand hotels on the seafront, palatial public squares, opera houses, and casinos designed to rival anything in Paris. In a group of no more than 14, your guide walks you through that transformation and the architectural ambitions behind it.
Your route covers the Promenade des Anglais and the surrounding boulevards of Nice's "New Town," the 19th-century expansion that turned a quiet coastal settlement into the winter capital of Europe. Along the way, you'll stop at the Negresco Hotel, whose pink dome and ornate Beaux-Arts facade have anchored the seafront since 1913. You'll cross Place Massena, the city's central square, where Italianate palazzi and the Fountain of the Sun mark the boundary between old and new Nice. You'll see the preserved Art Deco facade of the Palais de la Mediterranee, once the most glamorous casino on the Riviera.
The thread connecting these sites is the Belle Epoque: the period from the 1860s through the early 1900s when Nice reinvented itself for an international audience. Your guide unpacks the architectural vocabulary of that era: the imposing Beaux-Arts hotels meant to convey wealth and stability, the Art Nouveau ornamentation that challenged classical rules, and the early Modernist lines that pointed toward the 20th century.
Two hours. Fourteen people maximum. One seafront you'll read differently from now on.
