Description
Discover the beauty of the Caucasus Mountains on a day trip from Tbilisi. Visit the Gergeti Trinity Church, Ananuri Fortress, and enjoy a honey-tasting experience with local beekeepers.
visit Jinvali Reservoir, a crystal-blue mountain lake created by the Soviet-era dam on the Aragvi River. Surrounded by lush valleys and forested hills, the reservoir has become one of the most photogenic spots on the Georgian Military Highway. The view changes with the seasons: in summer the water shines turquoise, in winter it turns deep blue.
Continue to Ananuri Fortress, a grand medieval fortress overlooking Jinvali Reservoir. Built between the 13th and 17th centuries, it served as the seat of the Aragvi Dukes, playing a key role in Georgia’s history. The complex includes two beautifully decorated churches, high defensive towers, fortified walls, and secret passages.
Not far from Ananuri, the Black Aragvi merges with the White Aragvi in a unique natural phenomenon. The waters of these two rivers flow side by side without mixing immediately — one dark, one light — creating a striking visual contrast. This spot symbolizes the unity of diverse landscapes in the Caucasus region.
Along the road to Kazbegi, enjoy a warm and authentic Georgian honey-tasting experience. Local beekeepers offer natural mountain honey varieties such as acacia, flower, linden, and the famous dark chestnut honey. You can also try honeycomb, churchkhela, and homemade jams.
Next, visit the Soviet-Georgian Friendship Monument, built in 1983. The circular structure is decorated with vivid murals depicting Georgian and Russian history and folklore. The viewpoint is one of the most breathtaking on the Military Highway: snow-capped mountains, deep gorges, and endless alpine landscapes.
Finally, arrive in Kazbegi, officially known as Stepantsminda, a cozy mountain town surrounded by giant peaks of the Greater Caucasus. It sits at the foot of Mount Kazbek — a majestic 5,047-meter volcano wrapped in ancient myths. The village offers charming local guesthouses, cafés, mountain trails, and peaceful rural scenery.
