Country: Georgia
Duration:

Description
Explore the ancient city of Mtskheta on a guided walking tour. Visit the Jvari Monastery, Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, and Samtavro Convent.
Begin your walk with A. Pushkin, M. Lermontov, P. Tchaikovsky, A. Dumas père, L. Tolstoy, and many others. Turn off the trail to pass through the sites of the events described by Lermontov in his famous poem "Mtsyri."
Ascend to the 6th-century Jvari Church and enjoy a breathtaking view of Mtskheta: "...where the streams of the Aragvi and Kura rivers noisily merge, embracing like two sisters."
Next, visit the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (Life-Giving Pillar), the patriarchal cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church. Learn about its history and the significant events of its past. See the Christian relics buried here—the tunic of Jesus Christ and the mantle of the Prophet Elijah, as well as the relics of St. Andrew the First-Called.
Then, walk to the Samtavro Church, home to the tomb of the first Georgian Christian king, Mirian, and his wife, Queen Nana, as well as the relics of the holy elder Gabriel of Samtavro. See the blackberry bush under which she lived and preached. The "blackberry," repeatedly cut down by barbarians and then reappearing again and again, is considered miraculous.
