Description

Discover the myth of Spain through the eyes of Ignacio Zuloaga (1870 - 1945): His paintings show toreros and flamenco dancers, as well as the simple rural life.
Located in the heart of Hamburg next to the city hall, the Bucerius Kunst Forum organises four exhibitions each year, presenting world-class works of art from antiquity to the present day. It is a place to exchange ideas and encounter a broad range of visual arts.

Discover the soul of Spain through the eyes of Ignacio Zuloaga, an artist who left an indelible mark on the image of Spain around 1900. His vivid paintings bring to life the vibrant world of toreros and flamenco dancers, as well as the humble existence of the rural folk. Zuloaga's portrayals of ascetics, penitents in vast, sun-scorched landscapes, beggars, and fortune tellers echo the artistic heritage of masters like El Greco and Diego Velázquez.

In a time of rapid industrialization and Spain's shift towards European modernism, Zuloaga aimed to capture and preserve the essence of the "Spanish soul". His work grapples with the timeless question of Spain's identity: Should it cling to tradition or embrace modernity? Should it look inward or open up to Europe? These questions remain relevant today, making Zuloaga's work as poignant as ever.

This exhibition, a collaboration between the Kunsthalle München and the Bucerius Kunst Forum, shines a spotlight on this influential Spanish artist. It features around 80 of his works, offering a comprehensive exploration of his artistic journey. Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in Zuloaga's Spain.
