Find out why Hamburg is commonly known as the ‘gateway to the world’’ with a visit to the BallinStadt museum. Learn the important role that the city has played in the emigration of millions of Europeans since the 16th century.

Port of Dreams: an interactive exhibition that tells the story of people longing to leave Europe and the story of the person that made it possible, Albert Ballin – the namesake of the museum.

Learn how they arrived and lived in Hamburg whilst waiting to be shipped off to the new world. Understand what the daily life inside an emigration camp looked like and the challenges of starting a new life in a far-flung place.

World in Transit: a multi-visual exhibition that highlights emigration and immigration over the last 5 centuries.
