Description

Visit the breathtaking and magical castles of Neuschwanstein and Linderhof on a day trip from Munich in a private vehicle. See the mountains as you climb to the castle and explore inside the palace.
This 10-hour tour with a comfortable car whisks you from the heart of Munich to a world of wonder and magic, visiting two of the ‘Mad King’ Ludwig II’s fairytale palaces – the iconic Neuschwanstein and the Versailles-inspired Linderhof.
You will be met by your guide at your hotel in Munich, or a prearranged meeting point, and be driven out of the city through idyllic, undulating farmlands and into the German Alps. Be sure to have your camera at the ready – the views on this roughly two-hour drive are spectacular.
Upon arrival in Hohenschwangau – the small town beneath Neuschwanstein Castle – you will time to explore the charming shops, the serene Alpsee lake, and the grounds around the smaller Hohenschwangau Castle.
It’s then time to make the easy climb up towards Neuschwanstein. This takes roughly 45 minutes. There will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy the stunning views on the way up. For those with mobility problems, the shuttle bus will be used to reach the castle. Before entering Neuschwanstein, you will first make your way to the Marienbrücke. Suspended over a ravine, this suspension bridge affords breathtaking views of both the palace and the surrounding countryside. Next you will be taken on a 20-30 minute tour of the palace’s lavish, myth-inspired interior. When you come out there will be time for souvenir shopping and a break before we head back down to Hohenschwangau.
Next we make the short drive to the Versaille-inspired Linderhof – smallest of the three palaces built by King Ludwig II and the only one he lived to see completed. You will be taken on a short tour of the palace interior, and have plenty of time to stroll through the stunning surrounding gardens – one of the finest examples of historicist garden design in the world.
Throughout the tour your guide will tell the story of the castles themselves and the man behind their construction: King Ludwig II of Bavaria. You will learn about his cloistered childhood, eccentricity, myriad architectural follies, and the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death in 1886.After we have finished at the Linderhof you will be driven back to Munich. Your guide will accompany you back to your hotel or to a prearranged drop-off point of your choosing.
Please note:
Please note that the Neuschwanstein castle is located on a hill top, which requires a fairly long walk. Visiting the castle itself necessitates climbing a number of long staircases; therefore, the activity level can be challenging. The Linderhof Palace also has a few staircases, without an elevator.
Only employees of Neuschwanstein and Linderhof are permitted to give tours inside the castle. For the duration of your visit to the palace interiors you will be given an audio guide and taken round by one of the on-site guides.
