Description

On this tour you will learn numerous facts of a 1700-year history of Jews in Cologne. Those facts will be delivered to you by our professional local Guides.
The Jewish heritage is almost as long as the history of Cologne. Because of its continuity, it is called today the "oldest jewish congregation north of the Alps"! There have been Jews in Cologne since Roman times and their presence is woven through the fabric of the city from the medieval remains to persecutions, massacres ans destruction in the 1930s by Nazis. Why did the Jews have to leave Cologne and when were they allowed to return? How did Jewish life in Cologne develop in the 19th and 20th centuries? How does it look today?

The Guide will show you all important spots of Jewish life , starting with the archaeological excavation zone at the old jewish district from medieval period to the stained glass windows in the famous Cathedral depicting Elijah, Abraham and Isaac.
You will pass some Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) and learn about their purpose and how it brings the Holocaust victims symbolically back to their neighborhood.
Towards the end of the tour you will visit one of few buildings which survived the bombardment during WW2 - the GESTAPO prison with the original cells and the 1700 inscriptions of innocent inmates. The EL-DE Museum is today a documentation centre of the NS-Regime in Cologne during WW2.

The guides are experts and you will learn a lot about the dark chapter in Germany.
