Description

Discover Paderborn's blend of medieval and modern, from the world's largest computer museum to historical gems like its Cathedral. Dive into the city's rich legacy.
Paderborn is famous for its melange of medieval sites with contemporaneous architecture. The main building’s architecture will set you back in time. This city was put on the historical map by being the place where morphine was invented. In the early 19th century an apothecary called Friedrich Sertürner was the first one to isolate the compound out of opium. It is also the birthplace of Heinz Nixdorf, a German pioneer of the computer age who founded the company in this city and where its headquarters was until the company closed its doors in 1990. Once the fourth largest computer company in Europe, now it houses the world’s largest computer museum, exposing over 5 thousand years of communication and information techniques. See the grand Romanesque and gothic Cathedral and its 92 meters high tower, where Saint Liborius, the patron saint of the city rests. Take a look at the fountain Neptunbrunnen, wonder at the three-gabled Paderborn Town hall and be jolted by the baroque high altar of the Market Church, a soaring symphony of wood and gold, which was fully reconstructed after the bombing of World War II had destroyed the original 17th century one. Paderborn has much to offer!
