Longer version
Zemgale is one of Latvia’s central historical regions, often called the “breadbasket” for its fertile plains and farming tradition. Bauska became a natural hub where rivers, roads, trade, and power meet, with major landmarks close together.

We visit the region linked to the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia, often viewed by Latvian historians as a “golden age” of our story (alongside the Swedish era). The landscape carries the imprint of Baltic German influence, and later the Russian Empire, in land ownership, institutions, and the culture of estates and castles.

On this premium guided day tour, we travel about 80 km from Riga to the star of the day: Rundale Palace, often described as the “Versailles of the Baltics.” During the drive, your tour leader gives running commentary. At the palace, a licensed palace guide joins the group. Over the next two hours, you explore the 1700s through human stories: how power was displayed, how elites lived, and what life looked like for the people who kept that world running.

Throughout the excursion, we focus on motivations, rivalries, money, marriage, everyday life, the hubris of power, how fleeting it can be, and resilience. Expect dramatic episodes too, the kind of court gossip and scandal that travelled fast long before social media. The twist is how relatable it is: people three centuries ago wanted status, security, and attention, just like today, in a world before running water, flush toilets, central heating, electricity, and the internal combustion engine.

After the palace visit, we break for lunch. We help secure a table and pre-order food for the group. (Guests pay the restaurant directly for food and drinks.)

Post-lunch, we visit Bauska Castle for a short self-guided exploration, accompanied by our tour leader. This is the contrast to Rundale: fewer chandeliers, more strategy. The story steps back into the medieval borderland world, when military orders and rival powers fought for control of routes, river crossings, and taxation rights.

To finish the day, we include one additional stop selected in advance by your tour leader based on season opening hours, and what is realistically available on that date.
Possible add-on stops can be another manor house or a brewery, winery, or apiary visit.

This is a full-day experience designed to feel premium, guided, and personal: strong main sights, clear storytelling, and a flexible finish that keeps the day lively rather than rigid. It stays easy.
