It was not until 1855 that the Chemnitz teacher Johann Friedrich Stahlknecht built the first house on the Kaßberg (on a property that bordered on what was later named Hohe Straße). Since the area was still relatively undeveloped at the time, this decision was considered daring, which is why its builder gave the house the fourfold inscription “I dared.” Stahlknecht subsequently reported on the advantages of his residential area in various articles in a Chemnitz daily newspaper and thus attracted new builders.
With increasing industrialization, the development and development of the Kaßberg also progressed. The heights of the mountain were soon considered a preferred residential area, mainly because of the less polluted air compared to the rest of the city. What is characteristic of the approximately two square kilometer area, which was primarily built between 1870 and 1930, is the orthogonal network of streets, which was adapted to the topography by laying the streets parallel or at right angles to the slope. Kaiserplatz, Stephanplatz, Wielandplatz and Andréplatz were inserted into the street network as green spaces. Chemnitz companies operated on the edges of the Kaßberg, such as the Sächsische Maschinenfabrik (formerly Richard Hartmann), the Maschinenfabriken Germania (formerly J. S. Schwalbe & Sohn), Union and C. G. Haubold, the Baum safe factory, the Presto-Werke and the brothers' textile factory Goeritz et al. m. The city administration itself built numerous buildings here: the Royal District and Regional Court, the Royal Tax Authority, the Imperial Post Office, the Royal Prison, the Royal Gymnasium, the Higher Secondary School, etc.
The Kaßberg Prison Memorial commemorates the ransom of prisoners in the GDR and the time of National Socialism.[1]
The Kaßberg has been protected as an area monument since February 1991 and includes around 480 buildings, mostly multi-storey residential buildings, municipal administration and school buildings of historicism, Art Nouveau and New Objectivity.
