Description

Explore the enchanting town of Eisenach, nestled at the foot of the iconic Wartburg Castle. Immerse yourself in the history and culture associated with Martin Luther and Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia.
Welcome to Eisenach. Goethe called this hilly and small town a marvellous place. The town sits at the foot of Wartburg Castle, now one of Germany’s most famous castles and a Unesco World Heritage site and it is famous for its association with Martin Luther and Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia. Have a view of the Luther Museum, once the teenage home of young Martin Luther, where he stayed with the Cotta family to go to school in Eisenach (1498-1501). The two rooms he lived in are restored to their original condition.

Discover the medieval St.George's Church, where J. S. Bach was baptized in 1685 and where 14 years old Saint Elizabeth was married, in 1221. Members of the Bach family were the church organists for 132 years and Martin Luther was a choirboy here; he also preached in the church on his way to and from the Diet of Worms in 1521.

Eisenach is also the birthplace of Johann Sebastian Bach, where he attended the same school as Martin Luther, situated at Preachers' Church, a former 13th-century cloister. Eisenach has also the biggest exhibit of Richard Wagner memorabilia, including his death mask, at the Reuter-Wagner Museum. Not to forget is also the automobile tradition of the city where the first BMW rolled off the assembly line in 1929. Eisenach's factory produced cars for more than 100 years. Alas, you will wonder at the “Tiny House”, the narrowest, inhabited, half-timbered house in Germany, only 6 feet, 8 inches wide (2 meters). Let’s discover this and more in a walking tour where you can admire all the highlights of this charming town!
