Due to the many merchants' houses, warehouses, parish churches, monasteries and convents as well as the central St. Mary's Cathedral, the city was nicknamed "Thuringian Rome". This cultural heritage can of course still be admired today in Erfurt's old town, which is considered Germany's largest area monument.
