Description

Discover a hidden part of Athens on a guided walking tour that begins at the Evangelismos metro station and continues up to Anafiotika village. Take in some of the very best views of Athens from Philopapou Hill. Enjoy local wine and snacks along the way.
Meet your expert guide for this half-day tour at the Evangelismos metro station and set off a leisurely paced stroll through the streets of Plaka, the old town of Athens. In this sprawling, historical neighborhood you’ll follow along a maze of cobbled streets lined with examples of Neoclassical architecture, Byzantine churches, and busy shops.

On the northernmost streets of Plaka is the area known as Anafiotika, an idyllic cluster of whitewashed houses that are reminiscent of buildings in the Greek islands. In the 19th century workers from the Cyclades, homesick for their native island life, built the houses and painted them bright white to remind themselves of Anafi.

While listening to some stories about the area and its history from your guide, you’ll walk to the Rock of Ares, which is just a bit farther up the slopes of the Acropolis on Mars Hill. The colossal rock marks the site of the supreme court of ancient Athens. Kings from centuries ago are buried in tombs surrounding it.

Continue to Philopappou Hill, passing the prison where the Greek philosopher Socrates was sentenced to death on controversial charges. You’ll also stop at the top of Philopappou Hill to enjoy breathtaking views over Athens. Sit down with a glass of white wine and enjoy a picnic of various Greek delicacies.
