Description
Explore hidden corners of ancient Jaffa through archaeology, art, and legends. Discover excavations and private finds that reveal the layered history of one of the Mediterranean’s oldest ports.
Jaffa is one of the oldest port cities in the Mediterranean, with a history stretching back thousands of years. Beneath its narrow streets and picturesque alleys lie archaeological layers that reveal the story of ancient civilizations, trade routes, and cultural encounters. This walking tour explores Jaffa through archaeology, art, and mythology, uncovering the hidden history of a city built on the remains of many earlier worlds.
The journey begins near the historic gateway between modern Tel Aviv and Old Jaffa. From here we enter the ancient city, where Egyptians, Romans, Byzantines, Crusaders, and Ottomans all left their mark. Walking through the winding alleys of Old Jaffa, we explore how archaeological discoveries continue to shape our understanding of the city.
One of the most important stops on the tour is Kedumim Square, located in the heart of Old Jaffa. Beneath this square archaeologists conducted extensive excavations that uncovered ancient houses, streets, and artifacts revealing daily life thousands of years ago. These discoveries led to the creation of the Jaffa Archaeological Museum, where many of these finds are preserved.
The tour also highlights archaeology discovered during modern construction. At the site of the Setai Hotel, excavations uncovered remains from earlier historical periods before the luxury complex was built. These findings reveal how layers of ancient Jaffa survive beneath modern buildings.
In addition to large excavations, the tour explores smaller discoveries that reveal another side of archaeology. We visit the studio of jewelry artist Adina Plastelina, whose handcrafted designs are inspired by ancient cultures and biblical traditions. In the same space, small archaeological explorations conducted by her husband Sami uncovered fragments connected to Jaffa’s past.
Jaffa is also a city of legends and mythology. According to Greek myth, the princess Andromeda was chained to the rocks along the Jaffa coast. From viewpoints overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, visitors can imagine the landscapes that inspired these ancient stories.
The tour ends near the historic port, where traders, sailors, and pilgrims arrived for centuries before continuing their journey to Jerusalem. Here the layers of archaeology, mythology, and living culture come together to reveal the story of one of the most fascinating cities in the region.
