Description

A Naples where the dead and the living, saints and artists, legends and facts are intertwined. An extraordinary itinerary for those who want to immerse themselves in the city's memory, its streets, and its unconventional stories
To truly understand Naples, one must move away from the grand squares and famous monuments and explore cemeteries, the courtyards of old palaces, small artisan shops, underground burial chambers, street art, and the stories that have been told for centuries.

This itinerary takes us from the “forgotten souls” of the Fontanelle Cemetery to the unusual burial traditions of the San Gaudioso Underground Cemetery; from Jago's contemporary sculptures to the lives of ordinary people preserved in the Cartastorie archives. Along the way, we will be accompanied by fascinating characters such as queens, painters, saints, murdered lovers, a palace owner who is said to have tricked the devil, an alchemist prince, Caravaggio, and Artemisia Gentileschi.

But the protagonists of this excursion are not just people who lived in the past. We also trace the city's still-living culture through artisans such as the living urban legend who makes Naples' famous hand-painted price signs and ancient families who continue to produce traditional sacred art.

Throughout the journey from Sanità to the historic center, we will explore Naples' unique relationship with death, faith, superstitions, art, and everyday life. On the one hand, Neapolitans who take possession of the skulls of the dead and ask them for help, and on the other hand, saints depicted on the city gates to protect against the plague; a chair that is still visited today to conceive a child, the claim that Dracula is buried in Naples, and a palace believed to have been built overnight with the help of the devil...

During the lunch break, we don't take a break from the stories. Instead, we trace the city's gastronomic heritage at distinctive local eateries frequented only by locals, and we delve into an in-depth discussion of the city's dining culture.

This is not a classic tour of Naples, but rather a journey to discover Naples through the stories of its people. It's a completely different Naples itinerary that features small stories alongside big history, craftsmanship alongside art, and everyday life alongside the sacred; an itinerary that goes down into the underworld a little, listens to legends a little, and involves lots of strolling through the streets.
