Description

Discover Kanazawa’s samurai past through Kanazawa Castle, Oyama Shrine, and the Nomura Samurai House. Learn how castles and castle towns were designed for defense and prestige.
Meet your guide at Ishikawa Bridge, near the entrance to Kanazawa Castle Park. After a short introduction, begin exploring Kanazawa’s samurai history through the structure of the castle and the streets that once formed its castle town. Your guide will explain how this tour follows the perspective of both attacker and defender, helping you imagine how the castle would have protected itself in times of conflict.

Start at Ishikawa Gate, one of the most important entrances to the castle. Learn about defensive features such as the masugata square layout, stone-dropping points, and the way attackers could be slowed down and exposed. Continue toward Hashizume Gate and enter Gojukken Nagaya, where you can see the castle’s defensive architecture from the inside. As you walk through the long warehouse and turret structure, your guide will explain how defenders could watch and attack enemies, and how features such as plaster walls, lead roof tiles, and projecting windows served both practical and symbolic purposes.

Next, walk through Gyokuseninmaru Garden and Nezumitamon Gate toward Oyama Shrine. Here, learn basic shrine etiquette and discover how the shrine honors Maeda Toshiie, founder of the Kaga domain. You will also hear how this area was once connected to Kanazawa Castle’s outer defenses.

From Oyama Shrine, continue toward the Nagamachi samurai district, passing streets that still reflect the defensive design of a castle town. The tour ends at the Nomura Samurai House, where you will explore the residence, garden, formal rooms, and tea room of a high-ranking samurai family, gaining a deeper sense of both military structure and refined samurai culture in Kanazawa.
