Experience the beauty and tradition deeply rooted in Kyoto through the special activity of "Kinsai" (gold decoration craft). Kinsai is a sophisticated art form that involves applying gold and silver leaf or delicate gold powder to fabrics, folding screens, tableware, and other various items, transforming them into luxurious pieces of art. The elegant and subtle brilliance of Kinsai captures the hearts of viewers, making garments, particularly kimono, stand out exquisitely.

Encounter the rich heritage of a long-established atelier in Kyoto that has been preserving the traditional techniques of Kyo Tegaki Yuzen for over a century and through four generations of skilled artisans. In this activity, participants will have the rare opportunity to experience the "Tsutsugaki" technique, a particularly unique and refined Kinsai method.

Tsutsugaki involves the meticulous creation of fine gold lines and originally evolved from the "Itome" technique of Yuzen dyeing, where glue is applied along the outlines of patterns to differentiate colors. Those fine glue outlines are then traced with gold lines, creating a delicate yet striking effect. The complexity of the method and difficulty in passing down its skills led to its disappearance for about 60 years.

However, it was miraculously revived in the early Showa era, thanks to the passionate efforts of artisans who had previously specialized in glue application. During the workshop, you will first visit the studio where artisans work, gaining insights into the materials, such as gold leaf and gold powder, and observing firsthand the intricate craftsmanship involved.

Following this insightful experience, participants will receive detailed instructions and practice Tsutsugaki, preparing them for the main event: creating their original artwork on a specially provided paulownia box. Although Tsutsugaki requires precision and concentration, skilled craftsmen will provide clear and supportive guidance, allowing even beginners to enjoy the process comfortably.

Upon completion, each participant will have their uniquely crafted paulownia box to take home as a cherished memento. This engaging activity not only provides a memorable experience but also contributes to preserving and passing down Kyoto's invaluable traditional crafts for future generations. Immerse yourself in the exquisite world of Kinsai, where tradition and innovation harmoniously coexist.
