Pound your own mochi in the heart of Shibuya!
Mochi pounding (mochitsuki) is one of Japan's most beloved traditions — families gather to pound steamed rice into soft, chewy mochi to celebrate the New Year and special occasions. In this hands-on one-hour experience, you won't just watch: you'll grab the wooden mallet yourself.
Your English-speaking guide starts with a short, fun introduction to the history and meaning of mochi in Japanese culture. Then it's your turn — take the kine (wooden mallet) and pound the steaming rice in a traditional usu (mortar), shouting "Yoisho!" together with your group. Every participant gets to pound; no one is left watching.
Once your mochi is ready, cut it into bite-sized pieces and taste it with a variety of classic toppings — sweet kinako (roasted soybean flour), anko (red bean paste), savory nori with soy sauce, grated daikon and more. Finish with a cup of matcha green tea.
Located just a short walk from Shibuya Station, this experience fits perfectly before or after exploring Shibuya, Harajuku, and Omotesando.
