Explore the desert wilderness of Wadi Rum on a private day trip from Amman.
Drive south to the UNESCO listed wadi, and enjoy a tour of the dunes,
mountains, and canyons in a 4x4 with a Bedouin driver. See ancient rock
inscriptions and highlights including the Hanging Arch and Khaza'ali spring,
where Lawrence of Arabia reputedly washed. Tea or coffee at a Bedouin
camp, round-trip private transportation, and Amman hotel pickup and drop-off
included.
After early pickup from your Amman hotel, settle inside your private, air-
conditioned vehicle with your private driver. Then, admire Jordan’s
rugged landscapes as you head south along the desert highway toward
Wadi Rum. This UNESCO-protected wilderness lies in south Jordan,
and consists of pink desert plains punctuated by mountains, cliffs, and
gorges traditionally inhabited by Bedouin tribes. The wadi is also where
T.E. Lawrence, better known as ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ fought alongside
the Bedouin during World War I, and where many scenes from the 1962
movie epic, 'Lawrence of Arabia,' were filmed. On arrival, swap your
vehicle for a 4x4 with a Bedouin driver at the wheel, and head for the
Wadi Rum visitor center at the gateway to the valley. Then, set off on a
4x4 tour of the area. Pass the towering mountain columns called the
‘Seven Pillars’ after Lawrence’s book, and soak in the stunning, lunar-
like scenery as you pass red dunes and towering granite crags. Stop to
check out natural highlights such as the Hanging Arch and Khaza'ali
spring, nicknamed ‘Lawrence’s Spring.’ This natural spring gushes from
a rocky hillside and is where Lawrence reputedly bathed during the
1917-1918 Arab Revolt. Rumble along chiseled gorges and valleys,
drinking in steep cliffs and rock formations, and stop to view ancient
rock art and inscriptions dating back up to 12,000 years. During your
tour, relax at a Bedouin camp over a refreshing tea or coffee, and refuel
with lunch (own expense) before or after your 4x4 explorations. Before
taking your leave, you will also head off the main Wadi Rum tourist track
to follow less-visited trails near Jordan’s border with Saudi Arabia. After
admiring the scenery of this remote area, make your return drive to
Amman, ending your trip with a hotel drop-off.
