Begin your adventure with a 45-minute ride to the banks of the Nam Khan River. Along the way, stop at the Burmese-style temple Wat Phao Pao, an authentic weaving center at Ban Phanom village, and visit the final resting place of the French explorer Henri Mouhot hidden in the jungle a short way from the road.
Review kayaking basics and safety before heading down the river. Stop at Tad Sae waterfall for a refreshing bath in the natural turquoise pools (only July-January/February).
During the high-water season, the river is swollen, flowing well, and winds through stunning lush jungle, passing by rice paddies, local villages, and with any luck you may even spot some elephants bathing in the river.
In the dry season, exposed banks allow you to stop for interesting sights along the way. This 20 km (12 mi) easy-medium run usually takes 3-4 hours with breaks. You have the option to make the route shorter to approximately 9 km and 2 hours.
