Description
Discover Trakai on an eco-friendly day trip from Vilnius. Learn about the local geography, nature, and wildlife from your guide, and see the famous Trakai Island Castle from the best spots in the area
Join a green, low-impact trip to Trakai – a small town full of history, culture, and nature. Just 30 minutes by train from Vilnius, this journey is perfect for travelers who want to explore in a responsible way. Walk instead of drive, support local businesses, and avoid waste – all to help protect this beautiful place.
We’ll meet on the main steps outside Vilnius Train Station at 13:00, where you’ll recognize your guide by a yellow sign, umbrella, or bag. No need to worry about tickets – your guide will organize the train ride for the group. The experience begins on the train itself, with scenic views and relaxed conversation as you travel toward Trakai.
Upon arrival, we’ll start by exploring the surrounding nature, local history, and unique architecture of the area. The walk to Trakai center leads along the beautiful lake where we make a stop to discover nature’s treasures . As we approach the historic center, we learn about the first peninsula castle in Trakai and continue to get acquainted with the local unique Karaim community. Afterwards we take a short break so you can grab a drink or sample the famous local Karaim pastries – kibinai.
The tour continues to the iconic Trakai Island Castle, which we admire from the best viewpoints (entry not included, but optional after the tour). If you'd like to stay and explore more on your own, your return train ticket gives you the flexibility to do so. Alternatively, you can walk back to the train station and return to Vilnius by 6:00 PM.
As you walk by lakes, forests, and traditional wooden houses, you’ll learn about the region’s natural environment and cultural heritage. Discover the story of the Karaim people, who came to Trakai from Crimea centuries ago, bringing their own language, religion, and cuisine. Their culture is now endangered, with the Karaim language recognized by UNESCO as at risk of extinction.
