1. Early Morning Departure (04:30 – 07:00 AM)
Your day begins with a private pickup from your Zanzibar hotel. You are driven to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) for a domestic flight. These are typically light aircraft (12 to 30 seats) that offer a scenic view of the Indian Ocean and the Tanzanian coastline as you head inland [1, 2].
2. Arrival & Morning Game Drive (08:30 – 12:30 PM)
Upon landing at the Mikumi Airstrip, which is located right inside the park, you will immediately board a 4x4 open-roof safari vehicle.
The Mkata Floodplain: Most of the morning is spent here. This area is often compared to the Serengeti for its wide-open views [3].
Common Sightings: You are likely to see large herds of elephants, buffalos, and the "Mikumi Giraffe" (a subspecies with darker patches). Predators like lions are most active during these cooler morning hours [1, 3].
3. Bush Lunch (01:00 – 02:00 PM)
Lunch is usually served at a designated restaurant or picnic site within the park. Most operators provide a hot buffet or a pre-packed premium lunch box. It’s a chance to stretch your legs and watch animals (often zebras or impalas) wandering nearby [1, 4].
4. Afternoon Drive & Hippo Pool (02:00 – 03:45 PM)
After lunch, the route typically heads toward the Hippo Pool.
The Pools: Here, you can watch pods of hippos submerged in the water and large crocodiles basking on the banks.
Final Loop: The guide will use the remaining time to track any specific animals you missed in the morning, such as the elusive leopard or the Greater Kudu [3, 4].
5. Return Flight & Transfer (04:00 – 06:30 PM)
You are driven back to the park’s airstrip for your late afternoon flight. After landing back in Zanzibar, your driver will be waiting at the arrivals terminal to take you back to your resort
