Description
Experience the essence of Mongolia with a 4-day stay with a nomadic family. Sleep in a traditional ger, share meals, and contribute to daily chores while learning about the nomadic lifestyle.
Immerse yourself in authentic Mongolian culture during a 4-day stay with a genuine nomadic herder family. This is more than a sightseeing tour—you will live in a traditional ger, share meals with a local family, participate in daily activities, and experience the peaceful rhythm of life on the Mongolian steppe.
Your host family consists of an elderly couple, their four grandchildren. Their home is surrounded by beautiful countryside and four hectares of sea buckthorn orchards, offering a peaceful escape from busy city life.
Day 1: Ulaanbaatar – Elsen Tasarkhai – Nomadic Family
In the morning, we will pick you up from your accommodation in Ulaanbaatar and take you to the bus terminal. You will receive your bus ticket and travel approximately 5 hours across the vast Mongolian steppe.
Upon arrival, your nomadic host family will meet you and take you directly to Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dunes.
Here, you can experience the Mongolian desert landscape with activities including camel riding (own cost) and sand sledging. After exploring the dunes, you will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and have the opportunity to taste traditional Mongolian food.
After lunch, your host family will take you to their home. You will be welcomed with traditional Mongolian milk tea and shown to your own ger.
Spend the evening relaxing, exploring the surrounding countryside, or getting to know your host family. Dinner will be shared with the family.
Day 2: Live Like a Nomad
Start the day with breakfast and experience the family's daily routine. Depending on the season and daily schedule, you may participate in:
Milking cows or mares
Feeding livestock
Collecting dried dung for fuel
Preparing traditional dairy products
Making Mongolian milk tea
Learning how a traditional ger is organized
Herding livestock with the family
You are welcome to participate as much or as little as you wish. All meals will be shared with the family, giving you an authentic taste of Mongolian home cooking and hospitality.
In the afternoon, enjoy optional horse riding across the surrounding steppe and experience the vast open landscape.
Day 3: Experience Nomadic Culture
After breakfast, enjoy another relaxed day in the countryside. You can continue helping the family with their daily activities or choose to explore and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Optional activities include traditional Mongolian games, horse riding, photography, hiking, helping with livestock, and learning about Mongolian food and nomadic traditions.
This flexible day allows you to experience spending meaningful time with your host family.
Day 4: Return to Ulaanbaatar
After your final lunch with the family, your hosts will drive you to the local bus station in Rashaant. They will make sure you safely board your bus for the approximately 5-hour journey back to Ulaanbaatar.
You will arrive at Dragon Bus Terminal in Ulaanbaatar at approximately 15:00–16:00, marking the end of your Mongolian nomadic family experience.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
This is not a regular experience. You will be sharing the life of a nomadic family. Guest hospitality is sacred in Mongolia and the family will share their home and their food with you. You are expected to respect their culture and customs and to behave appropriately.
The nomadic life is a lot simpler than the life in the city. The network coverage is minimal, the drinking water is fetched from a well, the electricity is generated through a solar panel (charging small devices is possible), the woodstove is used for heating and cooking. The toilets are rudimentary and located outside.
This experience will not be suitable for those who cannot adapt to life away from modern amenities.
We ask travelers to have travel insurance before coming to Mongolia and joining the tour.
Horse riding, camel riding, and sandboarding involve some risk. Please follow our guides’ safety instructions.
By participating, you accept the risks and are responsible for your own safety.
