We leave Muscat and drive towards Nizwa (the former capital city of Oman and home of history). Visit Nizwa fort, castle, and the surrounding markets, where you can browse and purchase souvenirs, Omani dates, and sweets. Then, head to the oasis of Birkat al Mouz, a village with Falaj al Khatmin (one of the old irrigation systems added to the UNESCO World Heritage site). Drive up to Jabal Akhdar (Green Mountain), where you can view and hike among the old ruins of the villages. Good shoes for the short hike.
