Description

A private summer day from Tokyo to Hakuba, riding three lifts to 1,830 metres and walking to Happo Pond, which mirrors the peaks, then an outdoor onsen bath.
Happo Pond sits at 1,830 metres below the main ridge of the Hakuba mountains, and on a still day it mirrors the peaks directly above it, and this private summer trip rides you up by lift and walks you in, finishing with an outdoor bath before the drive home.

Your driver-guide collects you in Tokyo at 05:00 for the drive to Hakuba, reaching the Happo-one base by mid-morning. The three-lift ride up is included and carries you to around 1,830 metres, from where a marked trail leads to Happo Pond, a walk of roughly two and a half hours round trip through alpine meadow with the Hakuba mountains, among Japan's highest, rising directly ahead. The trail has some uneven and rocky sections but no technical climbing, and the pond itself, when the wind is calm, reflects the ridge line almost perfectly. After the walk back down to the lift station, your driver-guide takes you to Hakuba Happo Onsen, an outdoor hot spring bath included in your booking, a good way to rest tired legs before continuing into Hakuba village for a look at the ski-town streets, quiet in summer, and the drive back to Tokyo.

The van, driver-guide, fuel, tolls, parking and bottled water are included, along with your return lift tickets on Happo-one and your entry to Hakuba Happo Onsen outdoor bath.

This suits reasonably fit travellers who want real alpine trekking without a multi-day hike, and anyone who likes finishing a walk with a hot bath rather than just a shower. It is not suitable for anyone who cannot manage two to three hours of walking on uneven ground.

If the Happo-one lifts cannot run on your date because of weather, closure or availability, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed; an equivalent alternative is offered only if you prefer it.
