Discover the beauty of the Amazon jungle on a 3-day tour from Puerto Maldonado. Explore the Tambopata National Reserve, see the Sandoval Lake, and visit a clay lick to see parrots.
Day 1:
Be picked up from the meeting point in Puerto Maldonado and head to the lodge. Drive for 25 minutes through the city of Puerto Maldonado. Pass by a small community where you can see many parrots, macaws, and parakeets.
Arrive at the lodge and be shown to your private room with a view of the Tambopata River. After a brief rest, take a 1-hour introductory walk in the rainforest with a local guide. See a variety of trees that can be over 500 years old and spot some wildlife such as toucans, oropendolas, parrots, monkeys, snakes, and butterflies.
Return to the lodge for lunch and then head out on a boat to see the sunset. Take a break on the boat with comfortable seats and a panoramic view. Look for sloths and tropical birds along the riverbank. Use a flashlight to search for capybaras, white caimans, and herons.
Day 2:
Wake up early and enjoy breakfast before heading to the Sandoval Lake, a body of water that is over 3 kilometers long and is known for its biodiversity. Take a long boat ride to the entrance of the lake and then walk 3 kilometers to the lake.
Hop in a rowboat and see different species of birds and monkeys. Look out for hoatzins, jacanas, pumas, herons, eagles, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, black capuchins, titi monkeys, and sloths. Keep an eye out for giant river otters and the largest caiman on record, which was over 4 meters long.
Return to the lodge for lunch and then have the rest of the day to relax.
Day 3:
Wake up early and prepare to see a clay lick to see parrots. Head out by boat and then by land or river for about an hour to reach the clay lick. Watch the sunrise and listen to the sounds of the insects and birds.
See a large number of parrots gathered at the clay lick, ready to continue their feeding. The minerals they eat contain useful substances for their diet and detoxification. Keep a safe distance so as not to scare or threaten the parrots.
Return to the lodge for breakfast and then pack your bags. Say goodbye to the biodiversity of Peru and head back to Puerto Maldonado.
