Description
Discover Plaszow, Krakow’s forgotten WWII camp, on a guided tour that also tells the story of Oskar Schindler and those he rescued.
Plaszow Camp was established by Nazi Germany in October 1942 on the grounds of two Jewish cemeteries in Krakow. It began as a forced-labor camp for Jews from the liquidated Krakow ghetto; from July 1943 it also held Poles in a penal-labor section. In January 1944 it was redesignated a concentration camp and later functioned as a transit site for Hungarian Jews sent onward to Auschwitz. In total, over 35,000 people were imprisoned here and around 6,000 were murdered.
This guided walk rebuilds the vanished landscape through authentic points and careful storytelling. You will see the Grey House, the ruins of the pre-burial hall, the former roll-call square, and areas once assigned to living quarters, hospital, administration, and industry. Your guide will also explain how fragments of Jewish gravestones were used to pave camp roads, and why so few structures remain today.
At marked fields of mass graves and at major memorials—most notably the Monument of Torn-Out Hearts—you will pause to reflect on the victims and the choices that shaped daily life under terror. An essential thread is the story of Oskar Schindler: by securing work permits for prisoners registered through Plaszow and later arranging their transfer to his wartime plant in Brunnlitz, he saved more than a thousand Jewish lives.
With few buildings to “see,” Plaszow is a place of memory rather than spectacle. The open ground, silence, and thoughtful guidance create space for personal reflection—an intimate encounter with history that honors those who suffered and ensures their stories are not forgotten.
