In their search for tranquility, artistic inspiration, religious or mystical contemplation; kings, nobles, writers, musicians, painters and rich travelers made Sintra their destination. For admirers of the 19th century Romanticism, Sintra is its holy capital and Pena Palace its highest landmark.
In 1995 Sintra was classified by UNESCO as World Heritage Site.
