One of the most well-known attractions on the island of Madeira, the basket cars are a unique experience with over 100 years of history.
Departing from Funchal, you will take a 20-minute climb by tuk tuk to Monte. With an altitude of 585 meters above sea level, this is bound to be both a fun and scenic trip. Being a village at a high altitude, Monte of course offers several stunning views over the surrounding region.
Upon arrival, you can visit the church of Nossa Senhora do Monte, which will be followed by your descent down the mountain in a "basket cart". The process of descending in a basket cart, which has over 100 years of history, consists of a thrilling 2-kilometer descent.
Bound to be an experience you will never forget, your basket-cart ride will soon have you safely at the bottom of the mountain. Your driver/guide will be at the end of the trip waiting for you, at which point you will return to the city.
