Description
Discover Aveiro, the “Venice of Portugal”, on a full-day tour from Porto. Visit Costa Nova’s striped houses, enjoy a Moliceiro boat ride, explore Aveiro and visit the tiled Church of Válega.
Depart from Porto at 09:00 in a comfortable minibus and head towards Aveiro, one of Portugal’s most charming coastal destinations. Along the way, your guide will share insights into Portuguese history, culture, and the importance of this region, known for its close connection to the sea and traditional industries.
Your first stop is Costa Nova, a picturesque seaside area famous for its colourful wooden houses painted with vertical stripes. Originally built by fishermen to store fishing equipment, these houses have become one of Portugal’s most iconic coastal images. Enjoy a relaxed walk along the beach and through the neighbourhood while taking in the Atlantic views and unique architecture.
Continue to Aveiro for one of the highlights of the day: a traditional Moliceiro boat cruise through the city’s canals (approximately 45 minutes). These elegant boats were once used to collect seaweed in the lagoon and today provide a unique and scenic way to discover the city from the water.
After the boat ride, join a guided walking tour through Aveiro’s historic centre. Discover beautiful Art Nouveau buildings, the lively fish market area, the main canals, and Aveiro Cathedral, a baroque national monument. Learn about the city’s origins as a fishing and salt-producing town and understand why Aveiro is part of the prestigious Réseau Art Nouveau Network, alongside cities such as Barcelona, Brussels, and Budapest.
You will then have free time to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant or taste regional specialties, browse local shops, simply explore the canals and streets at your own pace.
In the afternoon, travel to the village of Válega, home to one of the most impressive tiled churches in Portugal. The Church of Válega is famous for its exterior fully covered in traditional azulejos, illustrating religious and historical scenes. You will have time to visit and admire this unique monument.
