Ntarama Genocide Memorial Site:
Formerly a Catholic church, Ntarama now stands as a somber memorial. During the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994, approximately 5,000 individuals fell victim to brutal massacres at this site. This memorial holds significant national importance and stands as one of Rwanda's primary sites dedicated to commemorating the Genocide against the Tutsi. Human remains, clothing, and artifacts left behind by the deceased are on display. Efforts to preserve this site indefinitely are currently underway, supported by the Rwanda Government.

Nyamata Genocide Memorial Site:
Nestled in the Bugesera region, approximately 35km from Kigali City, Nyamata and its surroundings bore witness to profound devastation and horrifying violence during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and moderate Hutus. The Nyamata Church genocide memorial offers a poignant insight into the grim reality of the Genocide against the Tutsi.

As the genocide unfolded in April 1994, residents sought refuge at the local church, futilely securing the iron door with a padlock to shield themselves from marauding killers, including members of the Interahamwe Hutu Militia and Rwandan Government Forces. Tragically, assailants breached the door, unleashing terror within the church armed with rifles, grenades, and machetes. Around 10,000 lives were lost in and around the Catholic Church compound on April 10th, 1994, at the hands of Hutu militias.

These memorial sites stand as poignant reminders of the atrocities committed during the Genocide against the Tutsi and the imperative of preserving their memory. The Nyamata Genocide Memorial Site's UNESCO World Heritage Centre designation underscores its global significance in commemorating the tragedy of the Genocide against the Tutsi.
