Description
Discover the Gao Family Mansion in Xi'an with this entry ticket. Tour its 400‑year‑old Shaanxi‑style official residence, admire classic courtyard architecture, fine carvings and ancient plaques.
Nestled in the heart of Xi‘an’s vibrant Muslim Quarter, the Gao Family Courtyard offers a rare and authentic window into China‘s rich residential heritage. As one of the city’s best‑preserved traditional courtyard residences, this 400‑year‑old architectural treasure stands as a tranquil oasis of Ming and Qing dynasty elegance, just steps from the bustling food streets.
The courtyard is the former residence of Gao Yuesong, a distinguished official who achieved the prestigious title of “Bangyan” (second place in the national imperial examination) during the Qing Dynasty. The plaque above the main entrance still proclaims this remarkable achievement. For over four centuries, the Gao family produced seven generations of officials, making this residence a place where centuries of tradition, scholarly accomplishment, and aristocratic culture come to life.
Architecturally, the courtyard is a classic example of a three‑courtyard, four‑compound Shaanxi‑style residence, covering approximately 4.2 mu with 86 rooms. As you step through its unassuming gate, the city‘s noise vanishes, replaced by a serene atmosphere of blue bricks, gray tiles, and intricate carvings. Every corner reveals exquisite craftsmanship: detailed brick and wood carvings adorn the eaves, featuring patterns of fortune and longevity. The layout strictly follows traditional Confucian principles of hierarchy, with guest rooms, side chambers, and the main house arranged in precise sequence.
The courtyard’s historical importance has been recognized internationally. In 1999, it was listed as a key China‑Norway preservation project, and in 2002, it received the UNESCO Asia‑Pacific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation, ensuring visitors experience a site of genuine global significance.
Perhaps the courtyard’s greatest advantage is its extraordinary location. While the surrounding Muslim Quarter teems with energy, this courtyard remains a peaceful haven, offering the perfect contrast of “half bustling market, half elegant old mansion.”
