Description
Our first visit is a tour of the new volcano.
Next, a visit to the volcanic tube of the Cueva de las Palomas.
This activity will give us a firsthand look at the importance of geology on the island of La Palma through visits to two key places:
A tour of the last volcano that erupted on the island, pouring its lava over the Aridane Valley
- A visit to the inside of the Cueva de las Palomas, a volcanic tube formed in the volcanic eruption of 1949.
Through a comfortable and informative tour, we can understand the appearance of a volcano on the earth's surface and its impact on the surrounding natural and human environment.
The impact of this latest volcanic eruption is still pretty clear in the Aridane Valley, in the southwestern region of La Palma, one of the youngest islands in the Canary Archipelago.
From the start, we'll have recent volcanic materials under our feet, and the dark color of the terrain will reflect the surface affected by the eruption in 2021.
We might get to see the volcano's residual activity through the fumaroles that have been around since the eruption ended.
The devastation that's happened in the area has left it a pretty inhospitable and silent place, with no wildlife around, but we're just starting to see signs of it coming back now.
The different shades of the cone will add a colorful touch to the route and help us understand the degassing that's happening.
The elevated position over the Aridane Valley will let us see the affected area and how a rural landscape disappeared, giving way to a new volcanic one, known for its hardness and color.
As a complement to the New Volcano route, the 'Caños de Fuego' Visitor Center will offer us a visit to the inside of the volcanic tube of the Cueva de las Palomas, as well as the chance to explore the inside of the center, with the option to visit another volcanic tube known as the Cueva del Vidrio, the exhibition halls, and the viewpoint on the roof of the building.
Finally, after these two different but complementary activities, we'll get a general idea of the volcanoes in La Palma and the Canary Islands.
